Goldwater predicted this

Back in 2006 I wrote:
Kind of makes you nostalgic for Barry Goldwater, a man who believed in legalized abortion, supported the NAACP, didn't consider gays in the military to be a problem and supported equal rights for all. In 1994 he told the Washington Post:

When you say “radical right” today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.
It would have been interesting to hear Goldwater's assessment of the Bush administration. I think he would have been horrified.
In fact, I miscalculated. Goldwater would have looked at the entire Republican party today and shuddered. They've become a religious party - no more; no less. The Canadian equivalent is the Conservative Party of Canada.

And I bring this up again because JJ has a list of Goldwater quotes which foretold the problems if the wingnut Christian Right ever got a handhold on a major political party.

Kiss politics goodbye. Unless sanity finally takes hold.

For your entertainment.
