Folk wisdom . . .

WHEN YOU'RE HOLDING A HAMMER, everything looks like a nail. Written by Bryan Glover, a Tennessee middle school football coach — who got fired for writing it. I don't like the Obama-bashing, but the lyrics are entertaining.

This opens the question of what constitutes free speech, which is what the coach is pleading. I taught in China for 8 years and felt free to say whatever the hell I felt like, usually anti-communist. Now that I'm in a proper school in Germany with parents on the Board of Governors (teaching history next door to Dachau with kids whose grandparents were at least in the Hitlerjugend) I have to be careful lest any word gets misconstrued. I think if you choose a profession that demands professionalism, there's a time and place. I mention all this as there's been a case recently of another American teacher fired for making rude comments about her students on Facebook. But then Glenn Beck has just comapared the victims of that Norwegian nut to the Hitler Youth and he's able to say any ignorant, racist thing he wants on the public airwaves and it just makes him more money.

I don't think he ought lost his job over that song (or any song), though I have no love for the willful right winger ignorance that spawned it.
