Conrad Black was sentenced to 61/2 years in prison on Monday.Judge Amy St. Eve had said she was considering a sentence of between 78 and 97 months for the media mogul. She ultimately decided on a 78 month sentence and a $125,000 (U.S.) fine.
He must also forfeit $6.1-million with no right to restitution.
“You have committed a serious offence, a very serious offence,” Judge St. Eve told Lord Black.
Black is required to surrender his body for incarceration by March 3rd, 2008.
Black should look at the bright side. He'll be in a federal institution and if the advertising is accurate, they will tailor his prison experience to meet his particular needs.
Think of all the time he'll have. He and Mark Steyn can spend hours "torquing it up and reciting the names of vice presidents... backwards". Hell, with time like that, he may even be able to get through all 50 US state governors and their lieutenants-governor. (I'm sure he'll excuse Steyn the time to zip back to Quebec on occasion... just to keep his citizenship alive and continue his access to certain, AHEM, social programs.)
Because Black was not convicted of treason, he can keep his life-peerage. That means he can insist that others address him as "Your Lordship". His fellow inmates will be tickled pink to know that they have a real-life lord among them.
And Lady Black, because she retains that prestigious British title, can still move around the creme-de-la-creme of British society where, who knows? Perhaps number five is just behind the champagne table.
H/T Chet.
