The Harper government has served notice that thousands of same-sex couples who flocked to Canada from abroad since 2004 to get married are not legally wed. 

But speaking in Halifax Thursday, the Prime Minister said the issue was not on the agenda for his majority Conservatives. “We have no intention of further re-opening or opening this issue,” Stephen Harper told reporters when asked about The Globe and Mail’s report. 

The reversal of federal policy is revealed in a document filed in a Toronto test case launched recently by a lesbian couple seeking a divorce. Wed in Toronto in 2005, the couple have been told they cannot divorce because they were never really married – a Department of Justice lawyer says their marriage is not legal in Canada since they could not have lawfully wed in Florida or England, where the two partners reside.  

I am about the furthest thing from a lawyer, but I'm betting lawyers from Whitehorse to Moose Jaw are reading this report with a significant amount of horror. James C. Morton holds out one of the easy examples of where this leads.

This is your Harper government. Their leader stands there and lies to you while they disassemble the rule of law.

Vic Toews. Covering his ass against a light westerly

Stop the presses! Stop the presses! Vic Toews is making an announcement!!!

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews announced almost $90,000 in government funding today for security infrastructure for six religious organizations in the Toronto area.

Wow! Almost hard to disagree with until you realize that he didn't identify the groups and the money won't even pay the wages of an executive director for two groups, much less six.

So, what's the big deal?

Hmmm. How about the fact that in Canada the largest single group suffering from an increase in hate crimes were homosexual men?

How much did any of the organizations which combat those crimes get?

Zero.

LIFE ISN'T VERY EASY FOR Donald E. Wildmon, aka the "wildman" of Christian fascist theology. Donnie's the Founder and Chairman of the American Family Association. This week, they have a wedgie about Home Depot. It apppears that Donnie's tighty-whities are hammering his hemorrhoids over "Home Depot exposes children to homosexuality in celebrated style". At least, that's what his hysterical site proclaims.

According to the 2010 Southern Maine Pride website, Home Depot signed on as a major sponsor of its 2010 Gay Pride event. But simply financing the event wasn't enough for the big box chain.

Home Depot also signed on as a vendor, conducting kid's craft workshops for children in the midst of loud and boisterous gay activities.

"loud and boisterous gay activities" — oh my! "celebrated style" — to the barricades! The Republic is in danger!
