One of the design goals for the Rideau Canal was to reduce the incidence of such diseases by drowning a bunch of extensive swamps. (Even if the theory of the day was concerned with "fetid humors".)
It's a related disease, rather than the same disease, as tropical malaria; the symptoms are pretty similar but the Ontario version is modernly 0% lethal absent complications.
Being cold and hungry and tired and never really dry are quite effective complications, which is what happened during the canal building.
