Of course they're afraid; pretty much everybody who identifies as "conservative" -- beyond the vanishingly rare "keep the good" kind -- is stuck with having got all emotionally identified with empirically false positions which do real harm.
Someone with a big political megaphone willing to point out both the falseness and harm pretty much has to be frightening to a conservative.
