Resistance pt. 1

Though their means are less crude, they like other insurgent movements driven by ideology and intolerance beginning in Paris café’s and classrooms, their’s began in insular Calgary political science faculties and think tanks, and the campuses of American fundamentalist “universities”. Like other insurgent movements, they hold the majority culture in contempt and seek to destroy it in the name of their vision.

Against the odds they’ve shown themselves to be remarkably resilient in their continued perpetuation of utterly contemptuous behaviour. There is no excuse for this. I see two reasons why they remain in power. First, Canada has not faced a government like this – maybe Quebec under Duplessis, but not the entire country. Our soft-spoken national culture does not know how do digest and shit them out. Harper knows this and that is partly why he is getting away with it. We stand and blink. We’re waking up, but we need to wake up faster.

The second reason, partly related to the first, is the failure of the opposition to organise and defeat them. Dion, (I like him because I have a soft spot for social scientists and I really think he means well) is a good guy but he appears out of his element in the face of a goon like Harper and his ilk. You can see it on his face when Harper smirks and Dion frets – there’s a personal bully dynamic at play. Polls are close and Dion, I reckon, is terrified of pushing an election that MIGHT give Harper a majority. Unfortunately, this may ultimately serve Harper as it makes the Liberals look, well, how they’re looking now. Without a viable alternative palatable to enough Canadians, Harper gets to continue, because some control is apparently better than the fear of no control to our current crop of parties.

Not. Good. Enough. While the Liberals may be waiting for the perfect moment, they’re also gambling on something that may never come. At some point they need to shit or get off the pot. Stop fucking around and step off. Harper counts on them to play ‘fair’ while he sneers and burns the rulebook. Stop letting the Cons frame the debate. Why? Because the longer they continue, the more their GOP brand of gangster politics is normalised. And that cannot be allowed to happen in this country. Ever.

Fuck’m. They’ve fucked up enough to give the Liberals a shitload ordnance should an election come. They try to bribe the dying; they openly subvert abortion laws; bring religious fanatics into government; and I guarantee they haven’t told you everything they know about Afghanistan. Kneecapping these fuckers should not be a challenge for a competent and aggressive Opposition faced with a minority government. Harper’s party is not omnipotent. They are vulnerable and weak in many ways. So Liberals, stop being afraid of them. Smile, laugh, and look forward to task of systematically destroying the Harper government.

I am.
